Hemorrhoids are nothing but swollen veins, they can be internal or external ones. You can find out more about causes and symptoms of hemorrhoids here. Now one of the most common questions that we get is about the time frame in which hemorrhoids will shrink or heal.
A lot of these questions are also about hemorrhoids and pregnancy as many women get them post partum or after delivery. Some women being first time mothers get very anxious about their problem which is natural. Who would like to have this pain when you have other things to worry about. Sometimes pain and itching can be quite severe.
Broadly speaking, you can heal your hemorrhoids in 48 hrs and it can also take you a couple of months.
So the time range is pretty wide. We will have to understand the factors behind this healing, cure or shrinkage. When the swollen veins come back to their original shape and there is no swelling or inflammation, they shrink automatically as they get reduced in size. We will list some of the factors which affect the time of healing.
Severity of the swelling –
If your veins are swelled up a lot and you have pain, itching and all the effects that come with it, it will take more time to heal. Smaller ones heal faster. Common sense isn’t it.
Type of hemorrhoids –
Hemorrhoids can be internal or external. In short, when the hemorrhoids are inside the anus they are internal hemorrhoids. External hemorrhoids are the ones which protrude out of anus. Now usually the external ones take more time to heal than internal ones.
The cause –
There can be many different causes for hemorrhoids, it can be due to pregnancy, prolonged sitting hours, lifestyle disorders, stress, diet deficiencies, chronic constipation and so on. Some of the causes like pregnancy are quite common. A lot of people also get them due to their long sitting hours. Human bodies were never meant for sitting for so long.
Age and gender –
Generally, more people get them as they get old, usually after 35 and females are more prone to this problem. So, younger people can get a relief, faster than older folks.
If the cause is something temporary, they can heal faster and if the cause has been present for years, It may take some months and even years to heal.
So, there are a lot of variables to this problem. You can heal them in one or two days and it may even take months.
Now another question that comes up is “what if I leave them untreated” or “will they go on their own”.
They can go away on their own in some cases, but even then it is not advisable to leave them untreated when you can fasten up the healing process or get a permanent relief with simple home remedies. Things like sitz bath can help you in short term and making some dietary changes will give you a better overall health.
Some of the home remedies and natural treatments can treat them within 24-48 hrs and also give you a permanent relief from them. So ideally, you should treat them as they occur to avoid flare ups and re-occurrences
